At 86, Beryle Pye is living proof that you’re never too old to achieve something amazing
‘My husband passed away three years ago and I found walking alone helped me to overcome my grief. My daughter Deb Fletcher told me about the #walk1000miles challenge she was going to do, so I decided to do it too. I completed the 1000 miles in six months, then decided to continue and walk back to ‘Land’s End’ and beyond to reach 2021 miles by the end of the year.
‘I have been doing this to raise money for multiple sclerosis, as sadly my eldest granddaughter Nisha was diagnosed with this dreadful disease aged 24. I have enjoyed the walking and will hopefully keep going as long as possible. Age is only a number and walking is the best way to keep fit.
‘I have macular degeneration – the type that can't be cured – and I fear losing my sight in the future. But walking helps me to forget this and be glad that I’m still able to enjoy the beauty of nature. Walking 1000 miles is the best way to keep fit.’
