If you think there’s a goal that’ll always be out of your reach, take a look at what else these amazing folk have achieved thanks to being turbo-charged by #walk1000miles – the challenge that broadens your horizons in every direction.
Turn the clock back over 10 years!
‘In 2009 (when I was a lot fitter!) I walked from Bristol to Glastonbury – 25½ miles in 9 hours 20 minutes. This year I signed up for my very first London Marathon, walking it virtually. I was expecting it to take me between 10 and 12 hours, thinking my fitness had dropped a lot in 12 years. Much to my surprise I discovered that, due to the #walk1000miles challenges I've been doing since 2018, my fitness was better than I thought and I walked 26.2 miles in 8 hours 24 minutes! #walk1000miles does truly help you achieve your dreams and goals. Thank you.’ – Jeff Sparkes
Walk 100km day and night
‘When I signed up for my first #walk1000miles challenge it was the starting point for some big changes in my lifestyle. Walking helped me lose 3½ stone that year. Next I seriously wanted to be able to keep walking all day. I asked the lovely #walk1000miles group for some advice and got a huge number of replies and as a result in September I walked all day and night in a 100km challenge over the South Downs. It was an amazing event, I met a lot of fantastic people, and a lot of money was raised for various charities.’ – Tony Easter
Explore these isles
‘After starting this challenge I knew I wanted to walk every coastal path on the habitable islands of Scilly. I managed two islands in the first year and this summer completed the others. I can also add in one mountain, Snowdon, and I’m part way through the Thames Path source to sea. Never would I have dreamed of doing any of these in my pre-walking life!’ – Kath Wareing
Circle a stunning lake
‘Small steps for me – I made it around Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia. I have a balance disorder so I had to sit down and shuffle a couple of times. I’m not ready for the upper reaches of Devil’s Kitchen any time soon!’ – Katherine Wheatley
Walk for 24 hours straight
‘Ever since joining I’ve wanted to see how far we could walk in 24 hours without sleep. My problem has been to persuade my hubby that he ‘wanted’ to do that too. Last autumn he finally gave in. We set off from the foot of Pen y Fan at 8pm, walked all the way around the outside of the central Brecon Beacons, and arrived back at the start very tired and achy at 8pm the next day. It was 48 miles of quite hilly terrain and we loved every minute.’ – Christina Lander
Cross the whole of Scotland
‘I’d previously walked up many a Munro and done the West Highland Way, but to do a coast to coast of 200 miles across Scotland carrying full wild camping kit was a whole different level. I’d seen others do similar adventures and thought, ‘I want to do this’. But the moral support this community provides is unparalleled in any other group I’ve seen. This motivation helped me to realise that it would be possible. It’s like a giant wave of supportive hands carrying you wherever you need to go.’ – Salyen Dick
