For lots of boots a membrane is essential. If it’s made from synthetic, or thin suede, the material won’t resist water penetration for long. If it’s a nubuck or leather boot with lots of panels, and stitch lines, then there are lot of holes where the water can seep in. Therefore, a membrane is the most important element keeping the inside of the boot dry. However, if you buy a boot (such as the Scarpa SL Active) with top quality Sherpa leather, and as few lines of stitching as possible, it should keep your feet as dry as a boot with a membrane.
In fact, the lack of a waterproof membrane means it can breathe more easily, therefore remain drier inside than a lighter boot with a membrane. The important thing to remember is to look after the leather properly, nourishing it, and maintaining a water-resistant coating on the outside. Scarpa’s HS12 cream will do both things if it is applied “little and often”.
