Doctor Karen Hegarty, 52 from Worcestershire got her 1000 miles sponsored, raising money for Medicins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders) with every step.
Why did you particularly want to support that cause?
As a doctor in the UK I have all the resources I need. The situation for millions of people throughout the world is very different. I am particularly inspired to help those in the most extreme situations. In my practice seriously ill or injured patients have a greater chance of surviving than a woman giving birth in the Congo. MSF brings medical care in extreme situations – this is medicine on the frontline. If we don’t care for the victims of violence, war, famine and natural disasters who will?
How's it been?
I’ve had a blast. Every time I thought it’s too hot/cold/wet to walk I reminded myself why I was doing it. That said I’ve become addicted to going for a walk for my own sake – it’s so restorative.
I now recommend it to many of my patients. The benefits of this free activity could save the NHS a fortune! It’s a shame Country Walking isn’t available on prescription!
And how much did you raise?
Over £1000 and it feels amazing – I get to do a good thing while experiencing all the benefits of walking. Win-win I think!
