Thom, the beach and the badge – a lovely #walk1000miles story

It’s lovely when anyone joins the challenge, but when it’s a badge-related chance event we find it particularly joyous…

12-year-old Thom was walking with mum on a Padstow beach on his birthday in January, when he spotted something on a passing walker that really caught his eye. It was a badge – a natural magnet for someone who’s been collecting badges for two-thirds of their life!

Showing characteristic 1000-miler values, the passerby was kind enough to tell Thom all about the challenge, the difference it has made to her life and to offer – unthinkable generosity considering its irreplaceable nature! – Thom the 2017 badge to keep. Thrilled, mum and son joined the challenge, and you can read all about that fateful meeting below.

And happily Thom HAS continued with the challenge, walking 71 miles in his first month and deciding to raise money for charity while doing it. Says mum Nicola: “Thom is loving his new challenge, he loves going out walking, and it’s all thanks to his badge collecting and a very lovely lady who took the time to stop and talk to him on her walk.”

The only question is…

Who was the generous badge giver? No names were exchanged at the time, and Thom and Nicola would love to say thanks again. Not only that, but we’d quite like to send you a little thank you too. So if it was you, or you know who, drop us a line!

Thom’s added his donated badge to his epic collection, and a brand new one too!

Can you spot them?
