The way we walked, or just the way we were, is an endless source of nostalgia and fun, which is why every week on Thursday we encourage you do dig out an old pic and share it with the group. Here are some of our recent faves…
That’s me in the postcard!
Mark Shore says: “This picture is of the promenade at Tywyn mid Wales 🏴 many happy holidays spent there as a child. We would go with my grandparents for 6 weeks to their van. This picture is actually a postcard and the little boy in blue is my brother and I’m the boy driving the car towards my father who is taking a photo of me at the bottom of the picture.”
All grown up!
Andy Lawrence: “This is for my Daughter Sophie who is a member of #walk1000miles too. We recently found this picture of her from the late 90s. She is suited and booted and rearing to go on a walk somewhere and looks very excited at the prospect too! I haven't stopped smiling at the picture since we uncovered it. The second picture is of her on a walk with me on the South West Coast Path last year. I find it great that she still wants to go for a walk with her dear old dad......”
Then and now
Helen Wernham: “Then and now, or at least last May. A new wooden bridge and trees have grown, but the same river and rocks at Wolfscote Dale in the Peak District”.
Our boy!
Nick Hallissey: “Turquoise pullover? Tick. Teachers in really short shorts? Tick. Cloud inversion? Tick. Must be 1994, when my school hiking club did the Three Peaks Challenge. Hoping in a week or two my hair will be this big again.”
A village tradition
Daniela Leinweber: “When I was a kid (2nd right) our village always organized a hiking event to the next village, which was about 5 miles away from where I lived. It was kind of a regional holiday because nearly everybody, no matter how young or Old, was part of it. It was my favourite day of the year but somehow about 25 years ago, it ended and has never been brought back to life again. Nonetheless, the memory will always stay alive. 🥰 Sadly I don't have a recent picture of this area at the moment.”
The hair bears
Jane Cordingley: “Although at that time often mistaken for a boy, l am the one wearing a bobhat. With 2 school friends - where are they now?”
Cagoules rule!
Jenty Black: “Taken on a walking holiday in Snowdonia c1976 with the southeast region Post Office rambling group. I'm bottom left and was 28 at the time. And yes, we did walk up Snowdon and yes, the clouds came in just as we reached the summit. I was wearing bell-bottom trousers! Not the easiest things to tuck into socks.”
Glamour time!
Jan Oakes: “Talk about posing (1972)!!! After a romantic day/walk along a beach, I left the things on the roof when I drove off!! Airhead!!! Lol! Plus it was a couple of days before my 18th. Wouldn't be able to sit on a car bonnet these days would dent.”
Not much has changed!
Janine Ford: “The one of me very young was taken early one morning along the river ouse at southease Sussex, I'd got up with my dad to take our dog Shep for a walk, I wore my favourite dress (don't even own a dress now) and have a lovely memory of the walk, but on return I got told off by my mother for not brushing my hair before I left!! The grown up picture was taken at Wast Water in the lake district, one of my favourite places in the world, with my old dog Woody who died last year. Always an outdoor person, always a dog person!!
Canny lass!
Anna Maria Sangiorgi: “A trip down memory lane in my homeland. Going up the Ávila Mountain in Caracas, Venezuela – 1980, with Mum, brothers and friends. Little Anna wearing red dungarees going up happy and light while her brothers are carrying all the heavy backpacks (what a cheeky Monkey eh?)”
A bundle of Joy
Joy Meakin: “Older? Yes. Wiser? Doubt it!”
