It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with your walks. So to introduce and element of creative chance while keeping you fairly local, try walking to your birthday this month. It’s a six-figure code just like a grid reference on an Ordnance Survey map - find it in the real world, plan a walk to it over what is likely to be unfamiliar terrain and that’s it - you’ve walked your birthday. It could win you a fantastic new OS Aventura 2 GPS worth £475!
How to do it
Using OS Maps app on your phone, find the two letters that indicate your National Grid area code. Do this by opening the app, the pressing and holding on the screen to reveal a ten-figure grid reference prefixed with two letters. Note the letters.
In the search bar at the top of the app enter your birthdate prefixed with the two letters noted above, eg SU271072. This 100m square is your birthday spot.
If it includes a path or is in an area of open access and is safe to reach, great! Plan a walk of the length you fancy, making sure it takes in your birthday spot. If it’s not accessible, try reversing your birthdate or using a pet’s or family member’s. The quest’s the important bit!
