Ian Smith, 64, from Edinburgh pays tribute to the Walk 1000 Miles challenge and the community he says has made a life-changing difference…
‘I joined this amazing challenge four years ago. Diabetes and depression ruled my life. Now 8000 miles down the road. Just over three stone lighter. A whole new wonderful family of 1000-miler friends who have inspired and helped me. The diabetes is totally under control. As for depression, I am in a new wonderful place, and very happy. I’ve learned to reach out and ask for help. It doesn’t mean you are weak. And of course, I still have a bad day here and there. But there are hundreds of good ones. I feel like I’ve totally changed my life. Love work, love walking, love LIFE.’
