Daniel Adcock from Kent started his 1000 miles as an antidote to lockdown – and his sunny outlook has warmed the community ever since. He loves filling in his 100-county Progress Chart, and that gave fellow challenger Kathy Cox an idea...
“We hatched the idea in the challenge Facebook group” says Kathy – “To try to get postcards from every one of the 100 counties on his map and send them to him as he completes a section.” Now nearly 300 postcards in, Daniel is thrilled, the postman is tired and mum Teresa says it’s another example of the overwhelming kindness that’s characteristic of the challenge community.
“It’s been great fun sorting through the cards” says Kathy, who collates and despatches them from her mini sorting office in county-by-county bundles. “Everyone really stepped up to the plate. I sent another 20 last week in a parcel, as someone had sent a gift to be forwarded to Daniel. Other members have sent me stamps to help with the costs, and we’ve had cards from all over the world as well. Daniel has really woven his way into so many hearts.”
Kathy now has cards from contributors in every county ready to go, and has recently sent him his Lancashire bundle. Daniel’s mum Teresa says: “He loves hearing the letter box man – as he calls him – bring his envelopes full of postcards with lovely messages from the amazing people in this group. They mean so much to both of us. We’re laminating all the cards and keeping them in a ring binder so Daniel will be able to read the messages as well as see the beautiful pictures from all over our lovely country.”
Through his challenge Daniel’s raised over £3000 so far this year for Motor Neurone Disease so it’s case of huge virtual hugs all round 1000-milers!
