Winter walks are magical – as you’ll find out in the stunning new issue of Country Walking. It’s called A Winter’s Tale and it’s a collection of amazing stories from the British countryside, to help you explore the wonders of our coldest but cosiest season.
It is, of course, tempting to find cosiness under a duvet or on the sofa right now. And don’t get us wrong, we love that bit too. But in this issue we’ve set out to find walks that tell their story best when it’s chilly, to give you a bit of extra motivation to get out there and seize the season (especially if there’s a warm fire and a glass or mug or something at the end).
We’ll take you to the Angus Glens, where three polar pioneers found inspiration that took them literally to the ends of the earth. And to the remote but beautiful Pennine valley of Baldersdale, where the unlikely TV superstar Hannah Hauxwell saw out winter after winter on her lonely farmstead.
We’ll get pursued by a bear in Shakespeare’s lost Forest of Arden, and head up a Shropshire mountain on the trail of ‘the nightmare after Christmas’. We’ll get you up close and personal with winter-loving wildlife (including butterflies!) and tell the eerie story of the mysterious Egryn Lights.
And just when things are feeling a little chilly, we’ll serve up an in-depth review of warming fleeces and soft shell jackets to keep you cosy even when the icicles are sparkling.
PLUS It also comes with our 32-page extra mini-mag WELCOME TO WALKING, which lists what we think is the perfect ‘first walk’ in each of Britain’s 15 national parks from Dartmoor to the Cairngorms. If there’s a national park you’ve always dreamed of visiting but weren’t quite sure where to start, we’ve got you covered.
Phew, out of breath now. Anyone got a brandy?
